My first impression about the ‘Little Paradise’ started when I looked at the cover- beautiful woman in a perfect Qipao, mysteriously beautiful. I wondered, is the story about this beautiful lady? I was intrigued and want to start reading the book desperately.
I found I could not stop once I started reading the magical words the author used making the story intense and interesting. That was when I wanted to know the author a little bit more.
She was a little girl who grew up in a neighborhood where there wasn’t many Asian faces so she was very lonely and depressed. She speaks fluent English, however, as a girl who has a Chinese heritage, she couldn’t speak a single Chinese word! The majority of her story is about fitting in and that makes me relate to her experiences and the book- I am a girl who is studying overseas for the first time and trying to fit in.
As I read more, I find that I am acquiring some knowledge of Chinese and the Australian histories. It is very helpful that she compared the Chinese life and Australian in the same time and helped me realized how different life was!
